How to Set Up or Change DNS Settings in Windows 7

Under many conditions, you may need to change the DNS settings in Windows 7. For example, while there is something wrong with your Internet connection, you may use another public DNS server for troubleshooting.

For another instance, you just bought a new computer and would like to use the Internet connection provided by your ISP, you need to set up the DNS server in your network settings before you surf the Internet.

(1) Go to Control Panel

Click on the Start(1) button which is at the bottom left corner of your screen, and then click Control Panel(2).

(2) Go to Network Connections

In Control Panel, type “Network” (3) in the search bar, and then many options related to Network will be showed up. Click on the View network connections(4) link.

(3) Choose a Connection

Right-click on the connection icon (5) and a corresponding menu will be displayed.

Select Properties to go into the connection’s Properties windows.

(5) Go to the TCP/IPv4 setting

In the Networking tab (7), double-click on the item corresponding with Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) (8). (Or you can click on it and then click on the Properties button as shown as figure a-5)

Select Use the following DNS server addresses(9), and then, fill in the Preferred DNS server field with number “″ (Google’s primary DNS server), and fill in the alternate DNS server field with number “″ (Google’s secondary DNS server).
